    Description

Puerto Vallarta is a popular beach destination located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in the state of Jalisco. Known for its charming cobblestone streets, vibrant culture, and stunning coastal scenery, the city attracts tourists with its beautiful beaches, lively art scene, and a wide range of outdoor activities like water sports and hiking. The Malecon, a picturesque seaside boardwalk, offers visitors scenic views, local shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. Puerto Vallarta is also known for its rich history, welcoming atmosphere, and being a hub for both relaxation and adventure.

    Malecon Boardwalk

The Malecon is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic landmarks. This scenic waterfront promenade stretches for about a mile along the Pacific coast, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. It’s a lively spot where you can enjoy local art, street performances, and a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and bars. The Malecon also showcases beautiful sculptures, including the famous “Dancers” sculpture, making it a perfect place for a leisurely walk, sunset views, or people-watching.

    Los Muertos Beach

Located near the Old Town (Zona Romántica), Los Muertos Beach is one of the most popular and accessible beaches in Puerto Vallarta. It’s a great spot for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying beachside dining. The beach is lined with vibrant bars, cafes, and restaurants where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or savor local seafood dishes. The pier, which is a striking modern structure, adds a special touch to the beautiful landscape, especially during sunset.

    Zona Romántica (Old Town)

Zona Romántica is the heart and soul of Puerto Vallarta’s charm. This historic district is filled with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and traditional Mexican architecture. It’s an area that radiates warmth, both literally and figuratively. Explore the quaint shops, galleries, and local cafes, and don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a beautiful historic landmark. The area is known for its lively nightlife and LGBTQ+ friendly atmosphere.

    Banderas Bay

Banderas Bay is one of the largest and most stunning bays in Mexico, and it’s a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. You can take a boat tour to explore the bay, enjoy whale watching (seasonal), or visit the nearby Marietas Islands, which are famous for their hidden beach (Playa del Amor). The bay is perfect for water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding, offering crystal-clear waters and an abundance of marine life.

El Malecon’s Sculptures and Art Walks

Puerto Vallarta is known for its vibrant art scene, and the Malecon features numerous public sculptures that showcase Mexican and international artists. If you’re interested in art, Puerto Vallarta offers an excellent Art Walk in the downtown area where you can visit galleries featuring contemporary Mexican art, photography, and sculptures. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the city’s creative culture and take home a piece of Puerto Vallarta with you.

    Yelapa

For those seeking a more secluded, peaceful experience, a day trip to Yelapa is a must. Yelapa is a small, traditional fishing village located south of Puerto Vallarta, accessible by boat. With its pristine beaches, waterfalls, and lush jungle, Yelapa is a perfect escape for nature lovers. You can hike to a hidden waterfall, enjoy fresh seafood by the beach, or simply relax in the tranquil surroundings. It’s a charming, off-the-beaten-path destination that feels worlds apart from the bustling city.

    Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Located just south of the city, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens are a must-visit for nature lovers. This lush, sprawling garden showcases a variety of tropical plants, including orchids, agaves, and other local flora. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the diverse plant life or hike the trails that lead to the river, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. The gardens also have a restaurant with beautiful views and a gift shop offering local handicrafts.

    Marietas Islands

A bit further off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, the Marietas Islands are a protected national park and a UNESCO site known for their ecological diversity. The islands are home to rare species of birds and marine life, and visitors can go on eco-tours, snorkeling, or even kayak through the caves. One of the highlights is the Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor), a secluded and picturesque beach inside a cave accessible by water.

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is an iconic landmark in Puerto Vallarta. Located in the heart of downtown, the church features a stunning neo-classical design and is one of the most photographed structures in the city. Its crown-topped bell tower is visible from many parts of the city and is a symbol of Puerto Vallarta’s devotion to Catholicism.

Dos and Don’ts in Puerto Vallarta

When visiting Puerto Vallarta, it’s important to be mindful of local customs and etiquette to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of Dos and Don’ts to keep in mind while exploring this beautiful Mexican destination:

    Dos

    1. Do Greet Locals Politely: Mexicans are known for their warm hospitality. When entering a shop or restaurant, it’s polite to greet people with a friendly “¡Hola!” or “Buenos días/tardes” (Good morning/afternoon). A smile goes a long way in building rapport with locals.
    2. Do Respect Local Culture: Puerto Vallarta is a culturally rich city, so be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or during ceremonies and festivals.
    3. Do Bargain at Markets: When shopping at local markets (like the ones in Zona Romántica or other outdoor markets), haggling is common. It’s part of the fun and helps you get better deals, but always be polite and respectful while negotiating.

    Don’ts

    1. Don’t Assume Everyone Speaks English: While many people in Puerto Vallarta do speak English, especially in tourist areas, not everyone does. It’s helpful to learn a few basic phrases in Spanish like “¿Cuánto cuesta?” (How much does it cost?) or “Gracias” (Thank you).
    2. Don’t Flash Expensive Items: As with any tourist destination, it’s wise to avoid displaying valuable items like expensive jewelry, cameras, or electronics in public places. While Puerto Vallarta is generally safe, it’s best to be cautious in unfamiliar areas.
    3. Don’t Tip in Coins: When tipping, it’s more appreciated to leave bills rather than coins, as coins are often seen as too small to be meaningful. Also, avoid leaving coins at hotels or restaurants, as they might not be accepted.

Best time to reach in Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your preferences for weather, activities, and crowds. Here’s a breakdown of the different seasons to help you decide when to plan your trip:

    1. High Season (November to April) – Best for Ideal Weather

The high season, which runs from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather. Expect warm, sunny days with temperatures ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Humidity is low, making it the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like beach outings, hiking, and sightseeing.

    1. Shoulder Season (May and October) – Best for Fewer Crowds

The weather in May and October is warm but starts to get a bit hotter, with temperatures reaching 90°F (32°C) or higher. May is particularly dry and is the last month before the rainy season begins. October is still part of the rainy season but usually experiences more sunny days than June to September.

    1. Low Season (June to September) – Best for Budget Travelers and Nature Lovers

June to September marks Puerto Vallarta’s rainy season. Temperatures can soar above 90°F (32°C), and humidity levels are high, making it feel even hotter. Rain is common, especially in the afternoons, but it typically comes in short, intense bursts, leaving plenty of sunshine afterward. Despite the rain, the lush jungle and coastal areas are beautifully green and vibrant.
