    Description

Alicante is a vibrant coastal city located in southeastern Spain, known for its stunning beaches, rich history, and pleasant Mediterranean climate. It is the capital of the province of Alicante and offers visitors a mix of modern amenities and historical landmarks, such as the imposing Santa Bárbara Castle, which overlooks the city. Alicante’s beautiful promenade, lively squares, and delicious local cuisine make it a popular destination for both relaxation and exploration.

    1. Santa Bárbara Castle

Perched on Mount Benacantil, Santa Bárbara Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks in Alicante. Dating back to the 9th century, this historic castle offers panoramic views of the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding countryside. The castle’s strategic location provides insight into Alicante’s past as a defense point. Visitors can explore the castle’s various levels, including its towers, dungeons, and the castle’s museum that showcases the region’s history. Whether by foot or via an elevator built into the mountain, Santa Bárbara Castle provides both a historical experience and breathtaking views.

    1. Postiguet Beach

Alicante is famous for its beautiful beaches, and Postiguet Beach is one of the most popular. Located near the city center, it is easily accessible and ideal for those looking to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean waters. The beach has fine golden sand, clean water, and a lively promenade lined with cafes, bars, and restaurants. Whether you’re sunbathing, swimming, or enjoying a leisurely walk along the shore, Postiguet Beach is a prime spot for tourists to unwind.

    1. The Explanada de España

One of the most famous promenades in Spain, the Explanada de España, stretches along the seafront of Alicante. This palm-lined boulevard is paved with 6.5 million marble tiles that form a wave pattern, making it visually stunning. Visitors enjoy strolling here, where they can find a mix of outdoor cafes, souvenir shops, and local vendors selling artisan goods. It’s an ideal spot for an afternoon walk or to relax in the shade of the palms while enjoying a drink or a bite.

    1. Alicante’s Old Town (El Barrio)

The historic heart of Alicante is El Barrio, an area of narrow, winding streets that reveal charming squares, colorful buildings, and traditional tapas bars. Here, tourists can immerse themselves in the city’s culture, discover hidden gems, and enjoy a laid-back atmosphere. The Basilica of Santa Maria, a 14th-century Gothic church, is a must-visit in this neighborhood, along with the nearby Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where the town hall is located.

    1. Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA)

For art lovers, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) is a must-see. Housed in a beautiful 17th-century building, the museum features an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by renowned Spanish artists such as Eusebio Sempere and José Royo. It’s a great place to appreciate a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, and temporary exhibitions in an inviting setting.

    1. Tabarca Island

A short boat ride from the city’s coast, Tabarca Island offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Alicante. The island is a small, uninhabited nature reserve with crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and walking along its scenic coastline. Visitors can explore the charming fishing village on the island, enjoy fresh seafood in local restaurants, and take in the stunning views back to the mainland.

    1. Mercado Central

For a taste of local life, a visit to Mercado Central is highly recommended. This bustling market, housed in an early 20th-century building, offers an array of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and local specialties. It’s the perfect spot to sample some of Alicante’s gastronomic delights, such as turrón (a type of nougat), local wines, and seafood dishes.

    1. Montañeta del Cid

For a mix of nature and history, Montañeta del Cid is a great destination for a hike or leisurely walk. This green space offers lovely views of the city and the surrounding mountains, as well as remnants of past civilizations. It’s a peaceful area to relax and enjoy the beauty of Alicante from a different perspective.

    1. The Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ)

Alicante is rich in history, and the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) offers an immersive experience of the city’s past. The museum’s exhibits span from prehistoric to medieval times and include fascinating artifacts like Roman mosaics, ancient pottery, and medieval relics. It’s a wonderful place for history buffs and anyone interested in exploring the region’s cultural heritage.

    1. San Juan Beach

If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to Postiguet, San Juan Beach is a vast stretch of golden sand located just outside the city. It is one of the best beaches in the area, offering clear waters and ample space for sunbathing and water sports. The beach is lined with bars and restaurants, and the laid-back vibe makes it ideal for a relaxing day by the sea.

    Dos and Don’ts in Alicante

When visiting Alicante, it’s important to be aware of local customs and practices to make the most of your trip and avoid any cultural misunderstandings. Here’s a guide to the Dos and Don’ts in Alicante, helping you enjoy the best of this beautiful Spanish city:

    Dos

    1. Do embrace the siesta culture: In Spain, many businesses, especially shops, close in the afternoon for a few hours, typically between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. This is known as the “siesta” time. If you’re out and about during this time, many restaurants and bars will still be open, but plan your shopping or sightseeing accordingly.
    2. Do try local foods: Alicante is famous for its delicious Mediterranean cuisine, especially seafood. Be sure to try arroz a banda (a rice dish cooked with fish), turrón (almond-based sweets), paella, and fresh seafood such as anchovies and prawns. Tapas bars are a must for small, flavorful dishes.
    3. Do use polite greetings: A simple “Hola” (hello) or “Buenos días” (good morning) goes a long way when interacting with locals. Spaniards are friendly, and greeting people properly will help you connect better with them.

    Don’ts

    1. Don’t assume everyone speaks English: While many people working in the tourist industry can speak English, not everyone in Alicante does. Be patient, try to use simple Spanish phrases, or learn basic Spanish vocabulary to help navigate more local areas.
    2. Don’t be too loud or disruptive in public: Spaniards generally enjoy socializing, but public spaces such as restaurants and public transport are typically quieter and more relaxed than in some other countries. Avoid being overly loud or disruptive when in restaurants or cafes.
    3. Don’t tip excessively: While it’s appreciated to leave a tip (around 5-10% for good service), it is not mandatory or as high as in some other countries like the U.S. Tipping is more common in restaurants and cafes, but don’t feel pressured to leave a large sum.

Best time to reach in Alicante

    1. Spring (March to May):

Pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Spring is one of the best times to visit Alicante. The weather is warm but not yet too hot, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Temperatures usually range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), with sunny days and cool evenings. Spring also marks the start of outdoor festivals and cultural events, and with fewer tourists than in the summer months, you’ll be able to enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace.

    1. Fall (September to November):

Warm weather without the summer crowds. The fall months offer fantastic weather, especially in September and October, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The summer crowds begin to thin out, and the beaches are still warm enough for swimming, but you can enjoy them without the rush of tourists. It’s also a great time to experience the local cuisine, festivals, and activities in a more peaceful atmosphere.

    1. Summer (June to August):

Beach lovers and vibrant nightlife. Summer is peak tourist season in Alicante, and the city comes alive with visitors from all over the world. Temperatures can soar between 25°C and 35°C (77°F to 95°F), with plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for beach lovers. The city’s beaches are bustling, and there’s a lively atmosphere in restaurants, bars, and clubs. However, keep in mind that it can get crowded, especially in July and August, and accommodation prices tend to be higher. If you’re after a more energetic vibe and don’t mind the crowds, summer is the time to go.

    1. Winter (December to February):

While winter is the off-season for most tourists, Alicante still enjoys relatively mild weather compared to other parts of Europe. Temperatures range from 8°C to 18°C (46°F to 64°F), which is perfect for those who want to avoid the summer heat. Winter is a quieter time to visit, making it ideal for those seeking a more peaceful and relaxed experience. Attractions are less crowded, and hotel prices are lower. The city also lights up during Christmas with beautiful festive decorations and events.
